How to Master CELPIP Speaking Task 6: The Difficult Situation
This task tests your diplomacy. You will be given a difficult situation (e.g., your friend is asking to borrow your new car, your boss wants you to work on vacation) and you must choose one of two options: (A) agree, or (B) politely refuse. In most cases, you will be refusing.
What You Will Do
- You will have 60 seconds to prepare your response.
- You will only have 60 seconds to record your speaking.
The #1 Trap to Avoid
The biggest mistake is choosing the wrong tone. Test-takers are either too weak ("Oh, I'm so, so, so sorry, please don't be mad...") or too aggressive ("No, you can't, that's a bad idea."). You must be polite, but firm. You are not a bad person for saying "no." You just need to explain your "no" in a logical, empathetic way.

Final Tips
- Don't Over-Apologize: Don't say "I'm sorry" five times. It makes you sound weak. One "I'm sorry, but..." or "Unfortunately..." is enough.
- Tone is Everything: Sound calm, reasonable, and confident.
