CELPIP vs PTE Core
CELPIP vs PTE Core: Which Should You Take for PR?
Updated
For PR, CELPIP and PTE Core are worth exactly the same: IRCC converts both to the Canadian Language Benchmark, and the same CLB level earns the same Express Entry points. CELPIP 7 is CLB 7, and on PTE Core CLB 7 starts at 60 listening, 60 reading, 69 writing and 68 speaking. Take PTE Core if you want a two-hour, machine-scored test with results in about two business days. Take CELPIP if you would rather have human raters judge open-ended speaking and writing tasks.
Exam Hero builds practice apps for both tests, so this comparison is not written to steer you to one of them.

CELPIP vs PTE Core scores: CLB side by side
CELPIP levels equal CLB levels, so one column covers all four CELPIP skills. PTE Core uses a 10 to 90 scale with different cut-offs for each skill, so it needs four. Read across the row for the CLB level your program asks for.
| CLB | CELPIP (every skill) | PTE Core Listening | PTE Core Reading | PTE Core Writing | PTE Core Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 10+ | 89–90 | 88–90 | 90 | 89–90 |
| CLB 9 | 9 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 | 84–88 |
| CLB 8 | 8 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 79–87 | 76–83 |
| CLB 7 | 7 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 | 68–75 |
| CLB 6 | 6 | 50–59 | 51–59 | 60–68 | 59–67 |
| CLB 5 | 5 | 39–49 | 42–50 | 51–59 | 51–58 |
| CLB 4 | 4 | 28–38 | 33–41 | 41–50 | 42–50 |
The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is where PTE Core gets steep, especially in writing. For the full PTE Core chart down to CLB 3, see the PTE Core score to CLB chart; for CELPIP's own levels and raw scores, see the CELPIP score chart.
Equivalencies from IRCC, checked on 2026-09-08: IRCC: Express Entry language test results. IRCC counts CELPIP 11 and 12 as CLB 10.
Speaking: the biggest difference
CELPIP speaking is eight open tasks of up to 90 seconds each: giving advice, describing a personal experience, describing a scene and predicting what happens next, persuading, handling a difficult situation. A human rater scores how well you communicate.
PTE Core speaking is many short tasks scored by machine. You read sentences aloud, repeat sentences you hear, describe an image in 40 seconds, respond to an everyday situation and answer quick questions in a word or two. Fluency and pronunciation carry a lot of weight, and some responses also count toward listening or reading.
If you are fluent but freeze when you have to invent an answer, PTE Core often suits you. If you speak with a strong accent or pause to think but organise ideas well, CELPIP often suits you.
Writing: survey response vs summary
Both tests ask for an email. CELPIP's second task is a survey response, where you pick one of two options and argue for it. PTE Core's other task is Summarize Written Text: read a passage and sum it up in a single sentence, which counts toward both reading and writing. CLB 9 writing on PTE Core needs 88 out of 90, the narrowest band on the test.
Which should you take for PR?
- Take PTE Core if your Express Entry deadline is close, you prefer short timed tasks, or one CELPIP skill keeps stalling on the open-ended format.
- Take CELPIP if you think better with a little preparation time, you want a human to judge your speaking and writing, or you already have a CELPIP score close to your target.
- Not sure? Sit a full practice test of each. The one you score higher on, skill by skill against the table above, is the one to book.
