Responding to Survey Questions

How to Master CELPIP Writing Task 2: The Survey Response

This is the final task of the Writing section. You will be given a scenario and asked to choose between two different options. Your goal is to write a clear, persuasive response (150-200 words) in 26 minutes, defending your choice with strong reasons and examples.

What You Will Write

  • One survey response, approximately **150-200 words**.
  • You have **26 minutes** for this task.
  • The prompt will describe a situation (e.g., your company is choosing a new perk, your city is building a new facility) and ask you to **choose one of two options** and justify your choice.

The #1 Trap to Avoid

The biggest mistake is being **vague or "wishy-washy."** You *must* pick one side and defend it confidently. Do not say "both options are good." The second biggest mistake is giving *opinions* without *support*. "I think the park is better" is a weak argument. "I believe the park is better *because* it provides a free space for families and improves community health" is a strong argument.

The CLB 9+ "4-Paragraph Structure"

Use your first 3 minutes to plan. This simple structure is the gold standard for a high-scoring survey response.

  • Paragraph 1: Introduction. Acknowledge the situation and **clearly state your choice**. (e.g., "Regarding the new city project, I firmly believe that building the new library is the superior option.").
  • Paragraph 2: Reason 1. Present your *strongest* reason. Explain it and give a clear example. (e.g., "Firstly, a library provides educational resources for all ages. For example, students can access computers for homework, and seniors can attend community workshops.").
  • Paragraph 3: Reason 2. Present your *second* strong reason. Explain it and give another example. (e.g., "Furthermore, the library promotes a quiet, safe public space, which is something our neighborhood currently lacks.").
  • Paragraph 4: Conclusion. Briefly summarize your position and re-state your choice. (e.g., "While a park has its benefits, the long-term educational and community value of a library is unmatched. Therefore, I strongly support the library project.").

Final Tips

  • Watch the Clock: Spend 3 minutes planning (choose your side and 2 reasons), 19 minutes writing, and **4 minutes proofreading**. Use the built-in spell checker!
  • Pick the "Easy" Side: You don't have to choose the option you *personally* agree with. Choose the one you can write 2 good reasons for the fastest.
