How to Use Connectors Effectively in CELPIP Writing

Connectors (or linking words) help your writing flow smoothly and logically. Examiners look for well-organised responses, and connectors play a key role in structure and fluency.

Common Types of Connectors

  • Addition: moreover, furthermore, in addition
  • Contrast: however, on the other hand, nevertheless
  • Cause and Effect: therefore, as a result, consequently
  • Examples/Clarification: for example, in other words
  • Time/Sequence: first, next, then, finally

How to Use Connectors

Task 1: Email Writing

Use connectors to structure requests or information clearly. Example: “I would like to book a meeting room. In addition, I will need a projector.”

Task 2: Survey Response

Use sequence connectors (Firstly, Secondly, Lastly) and cause-effect connectors to build strong arguments.

Tips

  • Plan your ideas first for easier connector use.
  • Vary connectors—don’t repeat the same ones.
  • Avoid informal connectors like “plus” in formal writing.

Final Thoughts

Connectors are more than grammar tools—they show clear communication. Use them strategically to improve coherence and organisation in your CELPIP Writing.
